On January 24 every year, India observes National girl child day. The day is celebrated to raise awareness among people about inequalities, discrimination, exploitation faced by the girls in the society.

It was started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008. In 2019, its theme was “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”.

 

Objectives of the day

  1. To raise awareness about the rights of girls.
  2. To talk about various atrocities and inequalities that girls face in their daily lives.
  3. To increase awareness about the importance of girl education, nutrition, and health.

 

Establishment of Chairs in the Universities

On the occasion of National Girl Child Day 2020, the Women and Child Development Ministry announced to set up ten Chairs in different fields with an aim to carry out research activities to encourage women. The initiative called the Establishment of Chairs in the Universities in the name of eminent women is being launched with the assistance of the University Grants Commission, UGC.

The main objective is to inspire women to pursue higher education and to achieve excellence in their area of work.

 

Proposed Chair name:

  1. On the subject of Administration- Devi Ahilyabai Holkar
  2. For Literature- Mahadevi Varma
  3. For Freedom Fighter (North East)- Rani Gaidinliu
  4. For Medicine and Health- Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi
  5. For Performing Art- M S Subbulakshmi
  6. For Forest and Wildlife Conservation- Amrita Devi (Beniwal)
  7. For Mathematics- Lilavati
  8. For Science- Kamala Sohonie
  9. For Poetry and Mysticism- Lal Ded
  10. For Educational Reforms- Hansa Mehta

 

The Chairs are to be established for a period of five years initially as per the guidelines. It aims to design and execute short-term capacity-building programmes for teachers in higher education focused on the designated discipline of the Chair.

 

Way ahead

National Girl Child Day is celebrated to improve the condition of girls in society. Women have to face several types of discrimination at their homes, workplaces and in daily lives. There are several programs and campaigns are organized across the country to create awareness about the conditions of the girls/ women.
