Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)

WHAT

  • Ajit Kumar Mohanty takes over as Director BARC.
  • Mohanty is the recipient of Young Scientists Award of Indian Physical Society (1988), Young Physicist Award by Indian National Science Academy (1991) and Department of Atomic EnergyHomi Bhabha Science & Technology Award (2001).

BARC

  • It is India’s premier nuclear research facility headquartered in Trombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) was built up by the government of India in 1954 to unite all the innovative work, research and development for atomic (nuclear) reactors and technology under the AEET.
  • After the demise of Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha in 1966, AEET was renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
  • BARC has emerged as the multi-disciplinary research centre with extensive infrastructure for advanced research and development.

APSARA

  • Apsara was the first nuclear research reactor in Asia.
  • It had become operational in BARC’s Trombay campus in August 1956.
  • It was first nuclear research reactor indigenously developed in India.
  • BARC has recommissioned India’s oldest nuclear research reactor named ‘Apsara’, which was shut down permanently in 2009 for repair.

Consumer Price Index

WHAT

The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 2010=100 to 2012=100.

  • Consumer Price Index Numbers on Base 2012=100 for Rural, Urban and Combined for the Month of February 2019.
  • Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for all India Rural, Urban and Combined are also being released for February 2019.

CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a value record which speaks to the average cost of a basket of goods over time.

As consumers in India show wide differentiation of their choice of consumption. Hence, a single consumer price index has not possible yet which can encompass all the Indian consumers. Depending upon the socio-economic differentiations among consumers, India has four differing sets of CPI proposed to be withdrawn in coming time.

  • Consumer Price Index for the Industrial workers.
  • Consumer Price Index for the Urban Non-Manual Employees.
  • Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourers.
  • Consumer Price Index for the Rural Labourers.
