India in the last ten years saw as many as 1.58 lakh persons being infected by the virus and over 10,000 succumbing to it.

 

Key findings

  • Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases since 2009.
  • Rajasthan and Gujarat has resulted in more cases being reported.
  • According to the National Centre for Disease Control data, Rajasthan is the worst hit in 2019.
  • Northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura had never reported influenza A (H1N1) cases in the past.
  • This year, Tripura registered 31 cases, Sikkim reported eight, while Meghalaya and Manipur reported two each.

 

H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

  • Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus.
  • It’s named for a virus that pigs can get. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can.
  • The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human.
  • There is a vaccine available to protect against swine flu.

 

Symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

  • In April 2009, the first case of influenza A H1N1 was reported in Mexico.
  • In temperate countries, influenza activity is recorded in winters.
  • Influenza also peaks during winters in some places and in some tropical countries, influenza sustains throughout the year.
  • In tropical and sub-tropical countries, the peak of influenza activity is during the monsoon.
