Educational institutions to work towards becoming centres of Excellence

WHAT

The Vice-President of India has called upon all educational institutions to work towards becoming centers of excellence providing quality, affordable, meaningful education to students.

  • Upgrading the quality of higher education institutions is essential.
  • Build world class infrastructure to train students to compete in global job market.
  • Attach more importance Knowledge and Skill while designing curriculum for students to train them to make professional with employable skills.

 

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE IN INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

  • Skill based education: teach a man a skill, don’t focus on cramming information.
  • Get smarter people to teach and provide them with time-to-time training.
  • More focus on Rural Education.
  • Use of technology for teaching/ smart classes/ E-library.
  • Gender neutral education.
  • Personalize education- one size does not fit all.

 

KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY

  • With around 7% growth rate, we are one of the world’s fastest emerging economies today.
  • In the next few years, we are likely to become a US $ 5 Trillion economy.
  • India is emerging as one of the most promising Start up Hub.
  • 44% of our 16000 Start ups are located in smaller towns.
  • This indicates the inherent entrepreneurial culture and talent of our youth.

 

INITIATIVES

  • Schemes for Elementary education: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid Day Meal, Mahila Samakhya, Strengthening for providing quality Education in Madrassas ( SPQEM).
  • Schemes for Secondary education: Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, Girls Hostel Scheme, National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education, Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage, Scheme of Vocational Education, National Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme, Scheme for construction and running of Girls’ Hostel for students of secondary and higher secondary schools, Scholarship schemes for Minority students, National Scholarships.
  • Schemes for Higher Education: Scheme of Apprenticeship Training, National Scholarships, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Scheme), Junior Research Fellowships for biomedical sciences, All India Council for Technical Education Scholarships, Department of Science and Technology grants and fellowships, DST’s Scholarship Scheme for Women Scientists and Technologists, Biotechnology fellowships for doctoral and postdoctoral studies by DBT Scholarships /Awards at Undergraduate & Postgraduate level in various science courses at the University of Delhi, Fellowships/Scholarships/Awards by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sports Authority of India promotional schemes, Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities – Schemes/Programmes, Scholarship Schemes for ST Students by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Post-matric Scholarships for SC /ST students, Scholarships for Minority Students.

MoU : India and Republic of Korea

WHAT

The Union Cabinet, has given its ex-post facto approval on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Republic of Korea on Startup Cooperation.

The MoU would facilitate and promote bilateral cooperation between the startups of both countries, subject to their national laws and regulations and any applicable international treaties, conventions and agreements to which the two countries are party.

Exercise Mitra Shakti-VI

WHAT

Exercise MITRA SHAKTI VI is a 14 days joint training exercise of the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army.

  • Mitra Shakti exercise conducted annually.
  • Started in 2012.
  • Mainly as a response to China’s efforts to increase its influence in South Asia and Indian Ocean region.

 

AIM

To enhance the tactical level operations in an international Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorist environment under the United Nations mandate.
