5th National Handloom Day

WHAT

National Handloom Day falls on August 7 every year.

  • The day is celebrated across the country honouring the handloom weavers and their contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
  • Handloom Mela and exhibition, workshops, panel discussion, special stall were organised across the country on the 5th National Handloom day.

 

OBJECTIVE

National Handloom Day seeks to focus on the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and also increase the income of weavers.

 

BACKGROUND

  • The Government had declared the 7th of August as the National Handloom Day in July 2015.
  • For the first time, the day was inaugurated on 7th August 2015.
  • Its objective is generating awareness about handlooms and the importance of the handloom industry to the socio-economic development of the country.

 

IMPORTANT INFO

  • August 7 was chosen as the National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement.
  • The movement was launched on this day in 1905 in Calcutta Town Hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British Government.
  • The movement had aimed at reviving domestic products and production processes.

 

HANDLOOM INDUSTRY IN INDIA

  • The handloom industry is the second-largest employment provider for the rural population in India after agriculture.
  • Over 4.3 million people directly involved in the production.
  • Indian handloom products are known for their unique designs and finesse. The trend is to mix old designs with new techniques and create original products.
  • The industry has strong infrastructure, with about 2.4 million looms of varied designs and construction, indicating significant production capacity.

 

HANDLOOM EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL

  • The Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) is a statutory body.
  • It is constituted under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
  • It promotes the export of all handlooms products such as fabrics, home furnishings, carpets and floor coverings.
  • HEPC was constituted in 1965 with 65 members, and its present membership is about 2,000.
