WHAT

I appeal to all the people of India to make ‘Eat Right’ movement a ‘Jan Andolan’ with ‘Jan Bhagidhari’ just as we all had come together and made India Polio-free.

  • Food is everyone’s responsibility- let us pledge to not waste even one grain of food, and ensure that in our own personal capacities and in our institutions, contribute towards food security.
  • This will help to eliminate poverty, hunger and malnutrition”.
  • This was stated by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare at the first-ever World Food Safety Day being celebrated by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • The theme for this day was ‘food safety, everyone’s business.
  • The New India vision of the Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji includes health, social security and nutrition.

WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY

The first-ever World Food Safety Day, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, will be celebrated on 7 June 2019 under the theme “Food Safety, everyone’s business”.

  • WHO, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is pleased to facilitate Member States effort to celebrate the World Food Safety Day this year and in coming years.
  • Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health.
  • With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne diseases annually – almost 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated – food safety is an increasing threat to human health.
  • Children under 5 years of age carry 40% of the foodborne disease burden with 125 000 deaths every year.
  • Food safety is key to achieving several UN Sustainable Development Goals and is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers.
