SAHITYA AKADEMI AWARD 2019

 

Twenty-two writers across languages were selected for Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2019.

This award is given to writers aged below 35. The selection of these awards, which comes with a cash prize of ₹50,000 each.

 

Sahitya Akademi

The Sahitya Akademi was formally inaugurated by the Government of India on 12 March 1954.

Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, was established in 1954 by the GoI. As India’s Premier literary institution, the Akademi preserves and promotes literature contained in twenty four Indian Languages recognized by it through Awards, Fellowships, Grants, Publications, Literary Programmes, Workshops and Exhibitions. The Akademi also undertakes literary exchange programmes with various countries across the globe to promote Indian literature beyond the shores of India.

Besides the 22 languages enumerated in the Constitution of India, the Sahitya Akademi has recognised English and Rajasthani as languages in which its programme may be implemented.

JNANPITH AWARD

 

  • Author, Amitav Ghosh, was felicitated with the 54th Jnanpith Award.
  • The award was given to him for his “outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Indian Literature in English”.

The Jnanpith award is the highest literary award in India and can only be conferred upon an Indian citizen. The English language was added to the list of languages for consideration after the 49th Jnanpith Award.

SHEATH BLIGHT DISEASE

 

  • Sheath Blight disease is a major issue in rice cultivation. It can cause up to 60 percent reduction in rice yield.
  • It is difficult to breed disease-resistant rice varieties, as there is lack of natural source of disease resistance.
  • Sheath blight is a soilborne disease.

Delhi based National Institute of Plant Genome Research has unraveled that the fungal pathogen causes the dreaded Sheath Blight disease in rice.

The researchers have identified several genes and gene families in the strain that might account for their disease aggressiveness.
