5th INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA

WHAT

21st June is celebrated globally as International Day of Yoga.

The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

 

THEME

  • This year’s theme for the International Yoga Day in India is ‘Yoga for Heart Care’.
  • As per the UN theme for the International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for Climate Action’.

 

BACKGROUND

The idea of the International Day of Yoga was first proposed by PM Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014.

The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice.

 

UNDERSTAND YOGA DAY LOGO

  • Folding of both hands in the logo symbolizes Yoga, which reflects the union of individual consciousness with that of universal consciousness, a perfect harmony between mind and body, man and nature, the holistic approach to health and well-being.
  • The brown leaves in the logo symbolize the earth element, the green leaves nature, blue the fire element while the sun symbolises the source of energy and inspiration.
  • The logo reflects harmony and peace for humanity which is the essence of Yoga.
