WHAT
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a draft notification for amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
The amendments will be done in exercise of the powers conferred on the central government under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
AIM
- Promote Green Vehicles
- Curb Pollution
- Boost production of Electric vehicles
- Ensuring divyang friendly features in buses
- Providing a mechanism for the scrapping of vehicles older than 15 years
HIGHLIGHTS
- It provides a boost to electric vehicles and ensuring divyang friendly features in buses.
- It also provides an enabling mechanism for the scrapping of vehicles older than 15 years.
- The fees have been increased for conducting fitness test and grant and renewal of the certificate of fitness for motor vehicles older than 15 years.
- Priority seats, signs, securing of crutches/ canes/ walkers, handrail/ stanchions, controls at priority seats and wheelchair entry/ housing/ locking arrangement for a wheelchair for Divyangjan to be checked and ensured at the time of Fitness Inspection for buses have been introduced.
- Battery Operated Vehicles will be exempted from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of the new registration mark.
- Newly purchased motor vehicles will be exempted from the payment of fees if and when they present the motor vehicle for the registration along with the SCRAPPING CERTIFICATE of the previously owned vehicle of the same category.
- The draft notification proposes certificate renewal charges of ₹1,200 for manual, and ₹2,000 for automated vehicles under the medium or heavy motor vehicle.
IMPORTANT INFO
To promote electric vehicles in India, the government had approved green licence plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private e-vehicles and yellow for taxis.
