India has slipped to 102nd position among 117 countries in the 2019 Global Hunger Index, prepared jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe.

• India’s score was 30.3, putting it in the serious hunger category.
• Four countries in the alarming hunger category and the Central African Republic in the extremely alarming hunger category.

 

The Global Hunger Index is a tool that measures and tracks hunger globally, by region, and by country.

 

Highlights

• It was the lowest-ranked among South Asian countries and way behind the other BRICS nations.
• Pakistan pulled ahead in the 2019 ranking to 94th place.
• India’s child wasting rate is the highest of any country at 20.8%.
• Only 9.6% of children between 6-23 months in India were fed a minimum acceptable diet
• India’s large population size may be the reason for India’s slow or very low progress
• Bangladesh shows robust economic growth by focusing on education, sanitation and health.
• Nepal has shown the highest percentage change in its ranking since 2000
• Nepal attributed to increased household assets, increased maternal education, improved sanitation, and implementation and use of health and nutrition programs, including antenatal and neonatal care.
• Climate change was affecting the quality and safety of food and worsening the nutritional value of cultivated food, which causes the alarming levels of hunger.

 

 

Parameters of the Index

The Global Hunger Index score, which reflects data from 2014 to 2018, is based on:

• The proportion of a country’s child population that is undernourished
• Share of children under 5 years of age who have insufficient weight for their height
• The mortality rate of under-5 children

 

GHI Scale

The Global Hunger Index ranks countries on a 100-point scale, with 0 being the best score (no hunger) and 100 being the worst.

• A value of less than 10: Low Hunger
• Values form 20 to 34.9: Serious Hunger
• Values from 35 to 49.9: Alarming
• Values of 50 or more: Extremely alarming
