WHAT

A high level team of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is on a visit to Odisha to assess the nature and quantum of damage caused by cyclone Fani to Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri and Sun Temple, Konark.

 

FINDINGS

Konark

  • There is no structural damage to the Monument.
  • There is some dislocation in the scaffolding provided for chemical cleaning at upper level which is being set right.
  • The monument will be opened to public in next 2-3 days.
  • The monument will be restored back to normal within about a fortnight.

 

Sri Jagannath Puri Temple

  • Found certain damages on the Surface but no major damage to the structure of the temple.
  • The team will also suggest restoration exercise needed for the monuments and the surrounding areas.

 

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA

ASI is an Indian government agency attached to the Ministry of Culture that is responsible for archaeological research and the conservation and preservation of cultural monuments in the country. It was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham who also became its first Director-General.

 

KONARK SUN TEMPLE

  • Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE sun temple at Konark about 35 kilometres northeast from Puri on the coastline of Odisha, India.
  • The temple is attributed to king Narasingha deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty about 1250 CE.
  • Dedicated to the Hindu sun god Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone.

 

JAGANNATH TEMPLE, PURI

  • It is an important Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of lord Maha Vishnu , located on the eastern coast of India, at Puri in the state of Odisha.
  • The temple is an important pilgrimage destination.
  • The present temple was rebuilt from the 10th century onwards, on the site of an earlier temple, and begun by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, first of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
  • The Puri temple is famous for its annual Ratha yatra, or chariot festival, in which the three principal deities are pulled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars.
