ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY TECHNOLOGY

For: Mains

Topics covered: Artificial Gravity technology, its Benefits, Significance, What is Gravity?

News Flash

Artificial gravity means imaginary spacecraft generating their own gravity by spinning around in space.

  • This artificial gravity has so far existed only in Science fiction.

What

  • A team from the University of Colorado is working on making ‘artificial gravity’ technology a reality.
  • The team at Boulder is examining ways to design revolving systems that might fit within a room of future space stations and even moon bases.
  • Astronauts could crawl into these rooms for just a few hours a day to get their daily doses of gravity.
  • Under it, a short-radius centrifuge will rotate around the room, gathering more and more speed.
  • The angular velocity generated by the centrifuge will push astronauts’ feet toward the base of the platform – almost as if he was standing under his own weight.

Benefit

It will one day help keep astronauts healthy as they venture into space, allowing humans to travel farther from Earth than ever before and stay away longer.

Gravity

  • Gravity is the force by which a planet or other body draws objects toward its center.
  • The force of gravity keeps all of the planets in orbit around the sun.
  • Anything that has mass also has gravity. Objects with more mass have more gravity.

Artificial Gravity

  • In a more general sense, “artificial gravity” may also refer to the effect of linear acceleration, e.g. by means of a rocket engine.
  • Rotational simulated gravity has been used in simulations to help astronauts train for extreme conditions.
  • Rotational simulated gravity has been proposed as a solution in manned spaceflight to the adverse health effects caused by prolonged weightlessness.
