CHINESE NAVY LAUNCHES TWO NEW GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYERS

China, which is developing its navy at a feverish pace, has commissioned two more 052D type guided missile destroyers. Their commissioning marked the 19th and 20th of launches of their kind. China now has 20 Type 052Ds.

Destroyers are fast, highly manoeuvrable long distance warships which are also used to accompany the aircraft carriers.

 

The US Navy currently operates more than 60 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and more than 20 Ticonderoga-class cruisers.

 

052D Destroyer

  • The domestically developed Type 052D destroyer saw significant upgrades on its predecessor, the Type 052C.
  • It is equipped with weapons and equipment, including advanced active electronically scanned array radar systems and 64 vertical launch missile cells
  • The ship is capable of undertaking missions, including escort and air defence.
  • The vessels launched back then were two Type 055s, China’s more advanced destroyer featuring a displacement of more than 10,000 tons and 112 vertical launch missile cells.
  • The Type 055 destroyer can provide stronger air defence umbrellas to, for example, an aircraft carrier combat group.

 

China’s fastest growing Navy

  • Chinese analysts said that plans are afoot to build more guided missile destroyers.
  • China might have more than 30 destroyers in the future.
  • New vessels being added to the fleet on a monthly basis.
  • Its second indigenously built aircraft carrier is currently undergoing trials.
  • Third aircraft carrier is being built at a feverish pace.
  • China plans to acquire about five to six aircraft carriers in the coming years.
  • China in the last few years expanded its navy and air force manifold to enhance its global influence and has cut down the size of its army by 3 lakh personnel.
  • The Chinese navy for the first time in its history has logistic bases in Djibouti in the Indian Ocean and is developing Pakistan’s Gwadar port in the Arabian Sea.
  • China also has acquired Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port in a debt swap for 99 years.

Guided missile

  • In military language, a missile, also known as a guided missile, is a guided self-propelled flying weapon.
  • An guided missile is self-propelled, unmanned space or air vehicle carrying an explosive warhead.
  • Its path can be adjusted during flight, either by automatic self-contained controls or remote human control.
  • Guided missiles are powered either by rocket engines or by jet propulsion .
