The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) along with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has launched India’s first web repository documenting air quality studies.
Highlight
- The Indian Air quality Interactive Repository (IndAIR) conducted the research to provide a history of air pollution research and legislation. The repository on air pollution is one of the first in the world.
- IndAIR reveals air pollution was recognised as a subject in India even in 1905 when a study was carried out for Bengal Smoking Nuisance Act.
- The website would be a useful platform for the scientific community to share its current work and exchange ideas.
- The repository, one of the few such facilities in the world, has the maximum number of studies- 262- concerning Delhi-NCR.
- The studies by S C Roy of the meteorological office detailed on cloud seeding to deal with famine-ridden areas in 1954.
NEERI
The CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) is a research institute which was established in Nagpur in 1958 as Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI) with focus on water supply, sewage disposal, communicable diseases and to some extent on industrial pollution and occupational diseases found common in post-independent India.
- Indira Gandhi (the then PM), rechristened the Institute as National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in the year 1974.
- NEERI is a pioneer laboratory in the field of environmental science and engineering and part of CSIR.
- NEERI falls under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Central government.
