First Bamboo Industrial Park

WHAT
Assam is set to become the first-ever Bamboo Industrial Park in the northeast region.
- Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is planning to set up a Bamboo Industrial Park at Manderdisa in Dima Hasao district of Assam in an area of 75 hectares.
- The in-principle approval will be granted to this project in August this year.
- The target is to complete the project by March 2021.
- This unique project will be a part of the ‘first 100 days agenda’ of the Modi Government 2.0.
- Another project for Bamboo Park in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh would be taken up by North Eastern Council (NEC).
NATIONAL BAMBOO MISSION
- Bamboo in India covers 13.96 million hectare area with 136 species.
- The Mission envisages promoting the holistic growth of the bamboo sector by adopting an area-based strategy and to increase the area under bamboo cultivation and marketing.
- Mission has taken steps to increase the availability of quality planting material by supporting the setting up of new nurseries and strengthening of existing ones.
- The Mission is taking steps to strengthen the marketing of bamboo products, especially those of handicraft items.
OBJECTIVES
- To increase the area under bamboo plantation in non-forest Government and private lands.
- To supplement farm income and contribute towards resilience to climate change.
- Increase the availability of quality raw material requirement of industries.
- To improve post-harvest management through the establishment of innovative primary processing units.
- To promote product development keeping in view market demand.
STRATEGY
The Mission will focus on the development of bamboo in limited States where it has the social, commercial and economic advantage, particularly in the North-Eastern region and States including Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala.
