Union Health Minister has launched the first-ever National Food Laboratory- Delhi, NCR of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in Ghaziabad.
- The Government has increased the number of food testing laboratories to 261 for the strict implementation of laws to ensure food safety.
- The Government also presented two “Food Safety on Wheels (FSW)” vans to cater to the food testing requirements in Ghaziabad and western UP.
- These mobile food-testing vans would be utilised for training and awareness-building activities as well.

National Food Laboratory (Delhi-NCR) is one of the most advanced laboratories in the country and is at par with any other laboratory in advanced countries like the USA.
FSSAI has brought out a simple lab in a box which is named Food Safety Magic Box with a compilation of 101 easy tests. It will serve as the best pedagogical tool to educate children about the concept of safe food.
National Food Laboratory
- The National Food Laboratory (NFL) Delhi-NCR, formerly the Food Research & Standardized Laboratory (FRSL, Ghaziabad), is one of the two premier referral laboratories under the direct administrative control of the FSSAI.
- NFL renovated and operationalized under a unique public-private partnership model, is the first of its kind venture in the food sector.
- It houses collaborative training centres namely the Food Safety Solution Centre (FSSC) and the Centre for Microbiological Analysis Training (C-MAT).
- This national lab is a result of a PPP with Arbro Pharmaceutical.
Way ahead
- FSSAI will set up NFLs at Mumbai and Chennai in the near future along the same lines.
- It is a plan to provide 500 food safety and testing vans in near future to support the states in ensuring food safety.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)
- FSSAI is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
- The FSSAI has its headquarters in New Delhi.
- The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
- FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.
- The FSSAI is headed by a non-executive Chairperson, appointed by the Central Government, either holding or has held the position of not below the rank of Secretary to the Government of India.
