WHAT
The Centre has decided to set up a plastic park in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha during 2019-20 fiscal.
- Four Plastic parks in the States of Assam (Tinsukia), Madhya Pradesh (Raisen), Odisha (Jagatsinghpur) & Tamil Nadu (Thiruvallur) are approved for implementation till 2019-20.
ABOUT PLASTIC PARKS
A plastic park is an industrial zone devoted to plastic enterprises. It includes a whole range of companies required by the plastics processing community from material and machinery suppliers, plastics processing companies, plastic recycling companies, etc.
- The parks will manufacture range of polymer products (woven sacks, moulded furniture, water tanks, bottles, pipes mosquito nets, etc.)
- The plastic industry is growing at rapid pace and polymer consumption in India will double from current 10 million metric tonnes to 20 million metric tonnes by 2022.
SIGNIFICANCE
- Provide direct employment generation.
- Attracting investment for setting up plastic industry ecosystem.
OBJECTIVE OF SETTING UP PLASTIC PARK
- Increase the competitiveness
- Polymer absorption capacity
- Value addition in the domestic downstream plastic processing industry
WAY TO ACHIEVE ITS OBJECTIVES
This will be done through:
- Adaptation of modern, research and development-led measures
- Increased investment in the sector through addition in capacity and production
- Creating quality infrastructure and other facilitation to ensure value addition and increase in exports
- Achieve environmentally sustainable growth theough innovative methods of waste management, recycling etc.
- Adopt a cluster development approach
