Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV)

WHAT
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) launched a Technology Demonstrator Vehicle to prove a number of critical technologies for futuristic missions from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
The Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle was test-fired from launch pad number-4 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha’s Balasore district.
- The HSTDV was tracked by various radars, telemetry stations and electro optical tracking sensors through its course.
- The HSTDV comes equipped with scramjet engine and it is capable of cruising at Mach 6.
- It has multiple civilian applications and can also be used for launching satellites at low cost and long-range cruise missile.
- A hypersonic missile is a “quick reaction missile” which makes in invaluable in offensive as well as defensive uses.
- In case of defence, it can be used to intercept incoming missiles in the outer atmosphere or in the inner atmosphere. It will help add to India’s ballistic missile defence capabilities.
- Only the United States of America (USA), Russia and China possess the technology to develop hypersonic missiles and India is the fourth nation in the elite league.
