WHAT
Anthropological Survey of India has conducted research on the impact of developmental and welfare programmes on contemporary Indian tribal communities are:
(i) Bio-Cultural Diversity, Environment and Sustainable Development.
(ii) Man and Environment.
(iii) Development and Sustainability.
(iv) Community Health, Disease and Genetic Structure of Indian Population.
(v) Anthropological Study of De-Notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA
- The Anthropological Survey of India’s genesis was from the Zoological and Anthropological section of the Indian Museum, which became the Zoological Survey of India in 1916.
- In 1945, the Anthropology section of the Zoological Survey was carved out to become the Anthropological Survey of India.
- Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) is the apex Indian government organisation involved in anthropological studies and field data research for human and cultural aspects, working primarily in the fields of physical anthropology and cultural anthropology.
- It is operating under the Ministry of Culture, and it is headquartered in Kolkata.
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES
- To study the tribes and other communities that form the population of India both from the biological and cultural point of view.
- To study and preserve the human skeletal remains, both from ancient and contemporary period.
- To function as a training centre for students in anthropology.
- To collect, preserve, maintain and document the bio-cultural heritage and the traditional art and craft of the people of India through Anthropological Museums.
- To publish the results of the researches.
