Khadi and Village Industries Commission

WHAT

Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, through Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), has taken various initiatives to make Khadi an international brand.

 

INITIATIVES TAKEN

  • To ensure the genuineness of Khadi “Khadi Mark” has been notified.
  • Khadi & Village Industries Institutions have taken its membership to enter the field of export.
  • Tie up an arrangement with premier institutions like the Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO), World Trade Centre (WTC), Indian Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO), Trade Promotion Council of India, etc., for invigorating business opportunities in the overseas market by conducting exhibitions and workshops for Khadi Institutions.
  • To the unique identity of “Khadi”, a separate HS code for 22 items of Khadi products is also requested.

 

KHADI AND VILLAGE INDUSTRIES COMMISSION (KVIC)

  • The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a statutory body, under the Act of Parliament, ‘Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956’.
  • In April 1957, it took over the work of former All India Khadi and Village Industries Board.
  • The KVIC is charged with the planning, promotion, organisation, and implementation of programs for the development of Khadi and other village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.
  • Its functions also comprise the building up of a reserve of raw materials and implements for supply to producers.
  • It also looks after in creation of common service facilities for the processing of raw materials as semi-finished goods.
  • KVIC has provisions of facilities for marketing of KVI products apart from organisation of training of artisans engaged in industries and encouragement of co-operative efforts amongst them.

 

OBJECTIVES OF KVIC

  1. The social objective of providing employment.
  2. The economic objective of producing saleable articles.
  3. The wider objective of creating self-reliance amongst the poor and building up of a strong rural community spirit.

 

  • Khadi refers to hand-spun and hand-woven cloth.
  • The raw materials may be cotton, silk, or wool, which are spun into threads on a charkha (a traditional spinning implement).
  • Khadi was launched in 1920 as a political weapon in the Swadeshi movement of Mahatma Gandhi.
