Kodiakkarai Wild Life sanctuary
A unique exercise of rehabitating deer population has been started in the Kodiakkarai Wild Life sanctuary in Tamilnadu.
- The graceful deers, which have been brought up in the protected environment in the Sivagangai park, have been transported by using special trucks to Kodiyakkarai, in Vedaranyam district, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal.
- The deers were examined by a team of veterinarians and then let off into the dense forests of the Kodiyakkarai sanctuary.
The sanctuary, located adjacent to and east of Kodaikarai and Kodaikadu villages, is basically an Island surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Palk Straight to the south and swampy backwaters and salt pans to the west and north.
The sanctuary was created in 1967 for conservation of the near threatened blackbuck antelope, an endemic mammal species of India. It is famous for large congregations of waterbirds, especially greater flamingos.
