National Doctors’ Day

 

National Doctors’ Day is a day celebrated to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities.

  • The celebration of the Doctors’ Day is an attempt to emphasize the value of doctors in our lives and to offer them our respects by commemorating one of their greatest representatives.
  • National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
  • Dr. Roy was honoured with the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1961.

The theme this year focuses on zero tolerance towards violence against doctors.

 

Bidhan Chandra Roy Award

The award was instituted in 1962 in memory of B. C. Roy by the Medical Council of India.

The Award is given annually in each of the following categories:

  • Statesmanship of the Highest Order in India
  • Medical man-cum-Statesman
  • Eminent Medical Person
  • An Eminent person in Philosophy
  • Eminent person in Science and Eminent person in Arts.

 

It is presented by President of India on July 1, National Doctors’ Day.

It was first awarded in 1973 to Sandip Mukerjee, FRCS, of Willingdon Hospital (now Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital), New Delhi, by V. V. Giri, the then President of India.
