RTO CHECK-POSTS
The Gujarat government abolished the manual checking at all 16 Regional Transport Office (RTO) check-posts from its borders with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, from November 20, where the RTO officials collect the taxes and exemption fees manually.
- The state issue learners’ driving licences at industrial training institutes (ITIs) and polytechnic colleges from November 15. The checkpost system will be abolished from November 20 and everything will be done online by the vehicle owners through prior self-declaration and online payment.
- The abolition of checkposts was aimed at ease of doing business, reducing traffic congestion and curbing corruption, while replacing the tax and exemption fees collection from transporters through an online system.
Regional Transport Office/ Authority (RTO/A)
RTO is the Indian government organisation responsible for maintaining a database of drivers and of vehicles for various states across India. The RTO issues driving licences, organises collection of vehicle excise duty (also known as road tax and road fund licence) and sells personalised registrations. The RTO is also responsible to inspect vehicle’s insurance and clear the pollution test.
Important Information
The High-security registration plates (HSRP) are hot-stamped with a chromium-based hologram of the size 20 mm x 20 mm on the top left corner which also features the Ashoka Chakra in Blue. At the bottom of the same corner, a 10-digit permanent identification number with the letter size being 5 mm is etched with a laser.
The HSRP was introduced to help reduce vehicle crime and improve security. It is intended to deter criminals from disguising stolen cars with the identity of written off or scrapped vehicles.
