WHAT
The restructured National Bamboo Mission (NBM) has been launched in 2018-19.
- The mission will focus on the development of a complete value chain of the bamboo sector and link growers with markets.
MISSION
- To increase the area under bamboo plantation in non-forest lands (private and government) to supplement farm income.
- Contribute towards resilience to climate change as well as the availability of quality raw material for industries.
- To improve post-harvest management.
- Promote product development keeping in view market demand.
- To rejuvenate the under developed bamboo industry in India.
- Promote skill development, capacity building, awareness generation for development of the bamboo sector from production to market demand.
- To re-align efforts so as to reduce dependency on import of bamboo.
IMPACT
- Bamboo plantation will contribute to optimizing farm productivity and income.
- Enhancing livelihood opportunities of small & marginal farmers including landless and women.
- The Mission will also help in creating employment generation directly or indirectly in both skilled and unskilled segments.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Restructured National Bamboo Mission (NBM) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
- Government has reduced GST on bamboo furniture & bamboo flooring to 12%.
BACKGROUND
- National Bamboo Mission started as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme in 2006-07.
- Mainly emphasizing on propagation and cultivation of bamboo.
- The restructured proposal gives simultaneous emphasis to the propagation of quality plantations of bamboo, product development and value addition including primary processing and treatment; micro, small & medium enterprises as well as high-value products; markets and skill development, thus addressing the complete value chain for growth of the bamboo sector.
