Scorpene Class Submarine – VELA

WHAT
Vela, the fourth Scorpene class submarine being constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited for the Indian Navy, was launched today, on 06 May 2019.
MAZAGON DOCK SHIPBUILDER
- MDL is one of the India’s leading shipyards with a capacity to meet requirements of the Indian Navy.
- Presently Eight Warships and five submarines are under construction at MDL.
- The contract for the construction and Transfer-of-Technology for six Scorpene class submarines in series, has M/s Naval Group (formerly DCNS) of France as ‘Collaborator’ and are being built by MDL.
SCORPENE CLASS SUBMARINES
These submarines can undertake multifarious types of missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.
They also have the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons.
The Scorpene class submarines are built with state-of-the-art technology. The submarines have superior stealth features such as:
- Advanced acoustic silencing techniques.
- Low radiated noise levels.
- Hydro-dynamically optimised shape.
- Ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons.
