WHAT
The 23rd edition of the Trilateral Maritime Exercise MALABAR is scheduled between the navies of India, Japan and the USA from 26 Sep to 04 Oct 19 off the coast of Japan.
The exercise would endeavour to further strengthen India – Japan – US Naval cooperation and enhance interoperability.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Exercise would encompass the conduct of complex maritime operations in the surface, sub-surface and air domains, focus on Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Air, and Anti-Surface Firings, Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) including Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) and tactical scenario-based Exercise at Sea.
BACKGROUND
- Exercise MALABAR originally begun in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between India and the United States, Japan became a permanent partner in 2015.
- The exercise includes diverse activities, ranging from fighter combat operations from aircraft carriers through Maritime Interdiction Operations Exercises.
- The 2018 Malabar exercise was conducted from 7 to 16 June 2018 off the coast of Guam in the Philippine Sea. This was the 22nd edition of the exercise and the first time it was held in United States territory.
