WHAT

The University Grants Commission has recommended 20 institutions for the status of ‘Institutions of Eminence.’

  • IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc, besides the private institutes BITS-Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Institutes and Jio Institutes.
  • UGC has recommended that Delhi University, BHU, Hyderabad University, IIT-Madras and IIT-Kharagpur.
  • Other universities includes Jamia Hamdard University, OP Jindal University and Shiv Nadar University.

The UGC has considered the reports of the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) appointed by the Government recommending (15) Public institutions and (15) Private institutions for considering to give the status of Institutions of Eminence.

PRINCIPLES USED FOR IDENTIFYING

  • Since the thrust of the scheme is to prepare institutions for the global rankings, no existing institution which has NOT figured in any of the global/national ranks shall be recommended for the IoE status.
  • Only after exhausting the above criterion, if any slot remains vacant, consideration shall be given to ‘yet to be established (Greenfield)’ proposals.

INSTITUTIONS OF EMINENCE PROJECT

  • The project was announced on September 2017.
  • The IoE project was announced for internationalisation of Indian campuses and creating world-class universities.
  • Institutions of Eminence scheme has been launched in order to empower the Higher Educational Institutions and to help them become world-class teaching and research institutions.
  • Ten public and ten private institutions are to be identified to emerge as world-class Teaching and Research Institutions.
  • This will enhance affordable access to high-quality education for ordinary Indians.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • In the case of the private institutions proposed as IoE, there will be no financial support, but they will be entitled for more autonomy as a special category Deemed University.
  • The Greenfield Institutions would get 3 year period to establish and operationalise the institution, and thereafter, EEC will consider giving IoE status to such institutions.
