Accidental leakage of urine or stool is a serious problem, hence, to create awareness about this condition globally World Continence Week is observed every year.
This year the World Continence Week is observed from June 17 to June 23.
Highlights
- It is revealed that this inconsistency affects an estimated 400 million people across the world.
- Once “Over Active Bladder” (OAB) is considered a medical condition of the elderly population, but now it is catching the younger generation, particularly, women and is estimated to affect approximately one in six adults.
Why Women are now more affected?
Women patients in their early 40’s suffering from this condition. This is because their bladder muscles are affected during pregnancy and childbirth and women have a shorter urethra also.
Patients suffering from OAB complain of urine leakage while laughing, coughing, sneezing and other things that put pressure on the bladder.
Treatment
- It is a treatable condition.
- Treatment includes lifestyle changes, diet, medication, and surgery (if required).
- Kegel exercises often help manage an overactive bladder.
- Limiting the intake of caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea.
- Avoiding spicy food and refraining from alcohol.
World Continence Week
World Continence Week (WCW) is an annual initiative devised and managed by the World Federation of Incontinence Patients (WFIP), with the approval of the International Continence Society.
It is a global initiative intended to raise awareness of bladder weakness, pelvic pain, and other debilitating conditions that impact greatly on the lives of patients and carers.
