The 45th Worldskills Competition held at KAZAN EXPO International Exhibition Centre in Kazan, Russia, came to end on the 27th of August. Russian Federation had thrown open the six-day event on August 22.
- Young professionals from 63 countries and regions, including a 48-member Indian continent, tried their strength in 56 skills.
- Russia hosts a global-level skills competition for the first time.
Aim
The aims of the competition include demonstrating the advantages of learning a vocational skill and encouraging ‘parity of esteem’ between vocational and academic qualifications.
45th Worldskills Competition 2019
It is a flagship event of the WorldSkills International, organised every two years. It is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry.
Highlights
- The team participated in 44 skills including mobile robotics, prototype modelling, hairdressing, baking, confectionary & patisserie, welding, bricklaying, car painting, and floristry.
- Most of these competitors come from very humble backgrounds from tier 2 or tier 3 cities in India.
- About 35 percent of team members’ parents are either employed in the agriculture sector or are working as daily wage earners.
The selection of Team India for WorldSkills 2019 began in January 2018, with the roll-out of a scheme on IndiaSkills Competitions.
Worldskills India
- It is an initiative of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
- NSDC, through its WorldSkills India initiative, has been leading the country’s participation at WorldSkills International competitions since 2011.
- It promulgates skills in society and motivates the youth to pursue vocational education.
- It invites sponsorships for organizing the local, regional, national and international skills competitions.
Worldskills International
- WorldSkills International was formerly known as the International Vocation Training Organisation (IVTO).
- It (WorldSkills) currently has 79 Member countries and regions. Most of the countries organise national skills competitions that help to prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future.
- It was founded in the 1940s and emerged from a desire to create new employment opportunities for young people in some of the economies that were devastated by the Second World War.
