GULBARGA TUR DAL

 

The ‘Gulbarga tur dal’ (Kalaburagi red gram), received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the government.

  • Red gram is the main Kharif crop in the Hyderabad Karnataka region.
  • The high calcium and potassium content of the soil in the Gulbarga tur dal-growing region has been one of the major factors for its superior quality.
  • Gulbarga tur dal has a good taste and aroma compared to that grown elsewhere. It also takes less time to cook.

 

Parameters

  • According to soil test reports Kalaburagi soil contains 3.6 g/100g calcium and 0.1 g/100g potassium. Whereas the soil sample in Bengaluru contains 0.135 g/100g calcium and 0.045g/100g potassium.
  • The other test parameters include volume, grain weight after cooking, leachable solid per cent, texture, appearance, colour, flavour, taste, and smell.

 

Significance

  • Red gram growers get a premium price.
  • The farmers growing tur dal of GI standard can increase the price by 10%.
  • The benefit of Minimum support price.
  • Create international demand for the produce.

 

Gulbarga

  • Gulbarga, also known as Kalaburagi, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka.
  • Previously it was part of Hyderabad State and incorporated into a newly formed Mysore State (now known as Karnataka) through the States Reorganisation Act in 1956.
  • The entire district is on the Deccan Plateau, and the elevation ranges from 300 to 750 m above Main Sea Level.
  • Two main rivers, the Krishna and Bhima, flow through the district. The predominant soil type is black soil.
  • The main crops are groundnuts, rice, and pulses.
  • Gulbarga is the largest producer of toor dal, or pigeon peas, in Karnataka.
  • The climate of the district is generally dry, with temperatures ranging from 8 °C to 45 °C and an annual rainfall of about 750 mm.

 

GI Tags

A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country).

 

Important Info
  • Kalaburagi district often called the “Red Gram Bowl” of Karnataka.
  • Darjeeling tea became the first GI tagged product in India.
