World Breastfeeding Week – 1 to 7 August 2019

World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign to raise awareness about breastfeeding.

• World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide.

 

Evolution

• World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every 1-7 August in commemoration of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration.
• Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including:

1. Healthcare systems
2. Women and work
3. The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes
4. Community support
5. Ecology
6. Economy
7. Science
8. Education
9. Human rights

 

Impact

• Encourages sustained action on a particular theme throughout the year
• Brings together stakeholders from diverse sectors to achieve common goals.
• Provides up-to-date information and tools for celebrants to take action

 

Facts and Figures

• In 2018, over 800 local groups around the world pledged their event.
• 2 in 5 children in low-and middle-income countries are put to the breast in the first hour of life.
• World Health Assembly aims to increase the global rate of exclusive breastfeeding to at least 50% by 2025.
• Breastfeeding can be linked to all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

 

World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action

• WABA is a global network of individuals and organisations.
• These are dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide based on the Innocenti Declarations.
• Innocenti Declarations is the Ten Links for Nurturing the Future and the WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding.
• Innocenti Declaration aimed to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
• WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF and an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
• WABA works closely with many organizations and individuals.
