The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published Indian Standard for identification, marking and labelling of Pashmina products to certify its purity.

Pashmina

  • Pashmina is the yarn spun & then woven into fabric from Pashm.
  • The fleece of the Tibetan or Changthangi Goat is called Pashm which is an urdu word & has its origins in Farsi.
  • Pashmina (also known as ‘cashmere’ in the West) literally translates to “Soft Gold” in Kashmiri.
  • Kashmir Pashmina has been assigned Geographical indication (GI) Tag.

Found

  • The Changthangi goat, found in the trans-Himalayan region is the distinguished breed of pashmina fibre bearing goat.
  • This goat is predominantly found in the high altitude regions where the temperatures drop significantly to allow them to grow the warm pashm fur to keep themselves warm.
  • This fine warm fiber, called “pashm” is shed by these goats during spring & that is when it gets harvested by the Changpa tribe.

4 distinct breeds of the Cashmere goat namely

  1. Changthangi (or Kashmir Pashmina goat) from the Changthang Plateau in Kashmir region,
  2. Malra from Kargil area in Kashmir region,
  3. Chegu from Himachal Pradesh
  4. Chyangara (or Nepalese Pashmina goat) from Nepal.

Why is Pashmina so exquisite?

  • The factors which determine the quality of pashmina are its fineness, its fiber length & color.
  • The raw pashm is available in colors ranging from white, considered the most premium, to brown & grey.

Bureau of Indian Standards

  • It is the National Standard Body of India.
  • It was established under the BIS Act 2016 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
  • BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and import substitutes; control over proliferation of varieties, etc. through standardization, certification, and testing.
