SWATANTRA SAINIK SAMMAN PENSION SCHEME
The Supreme Court has slammed the Centre for harassing a 90-year-old freedom fighter.
The High Court attempted to make the government realise that the objective of the pension under the Swatantra Sainik Samman Pension Scheme of 1972 is not to “reward” patriotic men and women who threw their lives into the Freedom Movement, but to honour them and mitigate their suffering.
Swatantra Sainik Samman Pension Scheme
- This is a Central Scheme for the grant of pension to freedom fighters and their families from the Central Revenues.
- It was introduced by the Government of India.
- The Scheme provides for the grant of pension to living freedom fighters and their families; if they are no more alive, and to the families or martyrs.
- The scheme provides for a monthly Samman Pension to freedom fighters, as a token of respect for their contribution in the national freedom struggle and on their demise, to their eligible dependents viz. spouses and thereafter, unmarried and unemployed daughters and dependent parents, as per prescribed eligibility norms and procedure.
Background
- The government of India introduced the ‘Ex-Andaman Political Prisoners Pension Scheme’in 1969 to honour the freedom fighters who had been incarcerated in the Cellular Jail at Port Blair.

- Thereafter, with effect from 01.08.1980, a liberalized scheme, namely the ‘SwatantrataSainikSamman Pension Scheme, 1980’ is being implemented.
- The amount of pension was initially Rs.200/- per month and has been revised from time to time.
