The Bhopal Municipal Corporation and the Central Pollution Control Board have joined hands to set up the country’s first e-waste clinic in Bhopal.

• E-waste clinic would enable segregation, processing and disposal of waste from both household and commercial units.
• The clinic is being conceived in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

 

Highlights & Features

• It is a three-month pilot project.
• Electronic waste will be collected door-to-door or could be deposited directly at the clinic in exchange for a fee.
• The facility would ensure scientific handling and disposal of electronic waste.

 

Electronic Waste

Electronic-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics which are destined for refurbishment, reuse, resale, salvage recycling through material recovery, or disposal are also considered e-waste.

 

The amount of electrical and electronic waste produced each day is growing enormously around the globe.

 

Recycling of valuable elements contained in e-waste such as copper and gold has become a source of income mostly in the informal sector.  More than 95% of India’s e-waste is illegally recycled by informal waste pickers called kabadiwalas.

 

India is the “fifth-largest electronic waste producer in the world.

 

According to ASSOCHAM, the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of e-waste is 30%. With changing consumer behavior and rapid economic growth, ASSOCHAM estimates that India will generate 5.2 million tonnes of e-waste by 2020.
