Two conglomerates of Kuki militants, Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People’s Front (UPF), have sought the intervention of PM Modi to subdue the rising tension between the Kukis and Nagas in Manipur over ‘Anglo-Kuki War’ claim.
KNO and UPF wants PM intervention into an order issued by the state government to remove memorial stones erected in Kuki villages marking the centenary of the ‘Anglo-Kuki War’.
Kuki people
- Kuki people are Tibeto-Burman Mongoloid-Jewish ethnic community, separated by the three international boundaries of India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
- The Kukis constitute one of several hill tribes within India, Bangladesh, and Burma. In Northeast India, they are present in all states except Arunachal Pradesh.
- Some fifty tribes of Kuki peoples in India are recognised as scheduled tribes based on the dialect spoken by that particular Kuki community as well as their region of origin.
- The majority of Kukis are Christians. Traditionally, the Kukis were animists.
