Tirunellai Narayanaiyer Seshan
Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan (1932 – 2019) was an Indian civil servant who served with the Indian Administrative Service. He served as the 18th Cabinet Secretary of India in 1989 and later served as a member of the Planning Commission.
- Seshan’s work as Chief Election Commissioner got international recognition when he was given the Ramon Magsaysay award for 1996.
- He was the only one to hold the post of CEC for six years from 1990 to 1996 in the last 50 years.
- Born on December 15, 1932, in Palakkad, Kerala, Mr. Seshan belonged to the 1955 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre officers of the IAS.
- Some of the reforms he implemented include enforcement of election code of conduct, Voter IDs for all eligible voters, limit on election candidates’ expenditure, appointing election officials from states other than the one facing polls.
