Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year to recognize and empower human rights. It mainly includes economic, social, cultural rights and international commitments on civil and political rights.
Theme 2019: ‘Youth Standing Up for Human Rights’.
The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations.
Human Rights
Human rights are the right to live, liberty, equality and respect of any human being. The Indian Constitution not only guarantees this right, but the court punishes those who break it. In short, human rights are the natural rights of every person.
National Human Rights Commission
The National Human Rights Commission of India is a Statutory public body constituted on 12 October 1993. It was given a statutory basis by the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
NHRC of India is responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights, defined by the Act as “Rights Relating To Life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants”.
This Commission has made its recommendations to the Government to protect the rights of ordinary citizens, children, women, elderly human rights, and people of the LGBT community in the country.
Date variance
- In South Africa, Human Rights Day is celebrated on 21 March, in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre which took place on 21 March 1960.
- The day is celebrated on 11 December in the Republic of Kiribati.
Important Information
- Human rights law came into existence on September 28, 1993, in India.
- Government of India constituted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on October 12, 1993.
- There are several rights that are included in the jurisdiction of the Commission such as economic, social and cultural rights.
