RISAT-2BR1

India launched its latest spy satellite, RISAT-2BR1, and nine foreign satellites through the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C48).

It aims to provide all-weather surveillance using synthetic aperture radars (SARs). The RISAT is used for border surveillance, to deter terrorist infiltration and for anti-terrorist operations as well.
It is part of India’s RISAT series of SAR ( synthetic-aperture radar) imaging spacecrafts and fourth satellite in the series.
RISAT-2BR1 is a radar imaging earth observation satellite developed by India’s space agency ISRO. The mission life of RISAT-2BR1 is 5 years.
The RISAT-2BR1 is follow on to RISAT-2B and has an X-band SAR with unfurlable radial rib reflector antenna of 3.6 meter diameter.
RISAT-2BR1 can operate in different modes including Very High Resolution imaging modes.
The satellite it is meant for application in fields such as agriculture and disaster management support, and has a mission life of five years.
The other satellites include six from the United States, and one each from Japan, Italy and Israel; their applications range from remote sensing to earth imaging.
The launch vehicle, PSLV-C48, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

India launched its first RISAT, with SAR technology from Israel in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in 2009.
A second RISAT – with an indigenously built SAR was launched in 2012. A third in the series, capable of taking images during any time of the day and under all weather conditions, was launched earlier this year in May.
