The deadly Corona Virus which has grappled China has now claimed its first Indian victim. The mysterious virus has its name because of its crown-shaped appearance.
Corona Virus
- According to scientists, the coronavirus belongs to the family of viruses that are resultant in deadly infections, including Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERSA) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
- Originally detected in animals, the virus quickly spread on to humans. There is no specific vaccine for the virus as of 2019.
Symptoms
- Early symptoms includes coughing, high fever, lung trouble and breathing issues.
- At later stages, the condition can manifest into complications like pneumonia, respiratory infections, and even kidney failure. If not treated, the coronavirus can even lead to death.
Transmission
The virus spread through symptoms like cough and cold, it is fairly easy for the virus to spread. Hence, the risk of transmission runs high in crowded place and areas which are highly populated.
Background
- Coronaviruses were first described in the 1960s from the nasal cavities of patients with the common cold.
- These viruses were subsequently named human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43. Two further members of this family have been identified (HCoV NL63 in 2004 and HKU1 in 2005) and they have been involved in more serious respiratory tract infections.
Important Information
The virus was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. Most of the cases have occurred in Arabian peninsula.
