SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL COURT

Former Supreme Court judge Justice A K Sikri has been appointed as an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC).

The appointment of Justice Sikri from August 1.
His appointment is until Jan 4, 2021.

Singapore International Commercial Court

The SICC was officially launched on 5 January 2015.
The SICC is a division of the Singapore High Court and part of the Supreme Court of Singapore designed to deal with transnational commercial disputes.
It is a superior court of law built on the foundations of a legal and judicial system that has been highly regarded and favourably ranked in international surveys conducted by, among others, the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development and the Hong Kong-based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy.

Jurisdiction

Generally, the SICC has the jurisdiction to hear and try an action if:

The claim in the action is of an international and commercial nature;
The parties to the action have submitted to the SICC’s jurisdiction under a written jurisdiction agreement; and
The parties to the action do not seek any relief in the form of or connected with, a prerogative order (including a mandatory order, a prohibiting order, a quashing order or an order for a review of detention).

Arjan Kumar Sikri

He is an eminent jurist and a former judge of the Supreme Court of India.
He had served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice AK Sikri retired as senior-most puisne judge of Supreme Court of India on 6 March 2019.
Sikri was chosen as one of the 50 most influential persons in Intellectual Property in the world in a survey conducted by Managing Intellectual Property Association (MIPA) for 2007.
