FIRST INDIAN AIRLINE “AIR INDIA” TO FLY OVER THE NORTH POLE

Air India hoisted its Boeing 777 aircraft over the North Pole to become the first Indian airline to operate commercial flights overflying the polar region.

The Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco usually flies over the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean but on August 15, it flew over zero degrees north.

North Pole

  • The North Pole is defined as the point in the Northern Hemisphere where the Earth’s axis of rotation meets its surface.
  • The North Pole is the northernmost point on the Earth.
  • North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean amid waters that are almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice.
  • The sea depth at the North Pole has been measured at 4,261 m (13,980 ft) by the Russian Mir submersible in 2007.

Zero Degree

  • Zero degrees (0°) latitude is the equator, the widest circumference of the globe. Latitude is measured from 0° to 90° north and 0° to 90° south—90° north is the North Pole and 90° south is the South Pole.
  • Imaginary lines, called meridians, running vertically around the globe.
  • Unlike latitude lines, longitude lines are not parallel.
  • Meridians meet at the poles and are widest apart at the equator. Zero degrees longitude (0°) is called the prime meridian.
  • The degrees of longitude run 180° east and 180° west from the prime meridian.
