The latest Henley Passport Index 2019 ranks the Indian passport on the 86th position with a mobility score of 58.

 

Henley Passport Index 2019: India’s performance

  • The score points out that Indian passport holders can access 58 countries around the world without a prior visa.
  • The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations — including micro-states and territories.
  • India shares the 86th position with Mauritiana and Sao Tome and Principe.

 

Henley Passport Index 2019: Global Performance

  • Asian countries dominate the rankings with Japan and Singapore holding onto the top spot with a score of 189 after they unseated Germany from its first position at the beginning of 2018.
  • South Korea sits in second place on the index.
  • Citizens of Finland, Germany and South Korea countries having access to 187 destinations around the world without a prior visa.
  • With a visa-free/visa-on-arrival score of 183, the UK and the US share sixth place.
  • Denmark, Italy, and Luxembourg are on the third rank.
  • France has dropped to the fourth spot, now sharing the position with Spain and Sweden.
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) has entered the top 20 slots.
  • Taiwan in 38th position.
  • Serbia at 41st place.
  • Afghanistan at 109th is last on the list.

  • Besides ranking, it provides in-depth travel freedom.
  • The index shows which countries one can access with which type of visa.
  • The Henley Passport Index is the only passport index that is based on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) data.

Background

  • It started in 2005 as Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index (HVRI) and was modified and renamed in January 2018.
  • The site provides a ranking of the 199 passports of the world.
  • Henley & Partners has analyzed the visa regulations of all the countries and territories in the world since 2006.

 

International Air Transport Association

  • IATA is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 290 airlines or 82% of total air traffic.
  • IATA’s mission is to represent, lead, and serve the airline industry.
