The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenously developed 500-kg inertially guided bomb at the Pokhran test-firing range in Rajasthan.

  • The bomb was fired by a Su-30MKI combat aircraft from a 30-km range and hit its target with high precision.

 

Guided Bomb

  • Guided bombs are meant to precisely hit a designated target to minimize collateral damage.
  • The weapon being developed is similar to the SPICE (Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective), an Israel made bomb which was used by the Indian Air Force to hit terror camps in Pakistan’s Balakot.
  • DRDO is also reportedly developing two such glide bombs named- Gaurthmaa and Garuda.
  • Garuthmaa is the winged version with a range of 100 km while Garuda is the non-winged version with a range of 30 km.

 

Guided Bomb

A guided bomb (smart bomb or guided bomb unit) is a precision-guided munition designed to achieve a smaller circular error probable (CEP).

Because the damage effects of explosive weapons fall off with distance according to a power law, even modest improvements in accuracy (and hence reduction in miss distance) enable a target to be effectively attacked with fewer or smaller bombs.

Therefore, with guided weapons, fewer air crews are put at risk, less ordnance spent, and collateral damage reduced.

DRDO is also developing a Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) which can be used to damage enemy airfields during war.

DRDO

DRDO was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the then already functioning Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).

Today, DRDO is a network of more than 50 laboratories engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines, like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training, information systems and agriculture.

Several major projects for the development of missiles, armaments, light combat aircrafts, radars, electronic warfare systems etc are on hand and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies.
