Fourth Scorpene-class submarine Vela launched in Mumbai (Mazagon Dockyard) with an aim to boost Indian capability to defend and secure the strategic sea lanes.

  • The Scorpene-class submarine Vela is the fourth of six underwater warships being built in India with French collaboration.
  • The fifth Scorpene-class submarine will be launched soon.
  • Before Vela, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited  (MDL) launched Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj submarines.
  • While Kalvari has been commissioned, the others are at various levels of trials and tests.
  • Vagir and Vagsheer, the remaining two submarines in the country’s Scorpene Submarine programme, are in the advanced stages of manufacturing at at MDL .

 

INS VELA

  • INS Vela was first commissioned on August 31, 1973 in the Indian Naval Service and continued to serve for 37 years.
  • It was the country’s oldest submarine when it was decommissioned on June 25, 2010.
  • It is refitted with the new modern machinery and technology and ready to guard the seas.

 

Scorpene class Submarines

  • These submarines can undertake multifarious types of missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.
  • They also have the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons.
  • The Scorpene class submarines are built with state-of-the-art technology. The submarines have superior stealth features such as:
  1. Advanced acoustic silencing techniques.
  2. Low radiated noise levels.
  3. Hydro-dynamically optimised shape.
  4. Ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons.

 

Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti

It was instituted by Department of Defence Production to enhance self-reliance in defence. It aimed to provide a boost to IPR culture in indigenous defence industry. The main objective of this programme was to inculcate IP culture in Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem.
