KALESHWARAM LIFT IRRIGATION PROJECT

 

The world’s largest multi-stage, multi-purpose lift irrigation project will start from July. The Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, an Indian lift scheme has become the world’s biggest in terms of capacities.

  • Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project is on the Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Bhoopalpally, Telangana,

The project has set many records with the world’s longest water tunnels, aqueducts, underground surge pools, and the biggest pumps.

  • Till date, the biggest lift schemes in the world were the Colorado lift scheme in America and the Great Manmade River in Egypt.
  • The project will provide water for irrigation and drinking purposes to about 45 lakh acres in 20 of the 31 districts in Telangana
  • The project will supply 40 TMC of water to the ambitious Mission Bhagiratha drinking water supply project.
  • The KLIP also throws open opportunity for hydel power generation in the state.
  • The Telangana government said 139 MW maximum capacity pumps, which were never used anywhere in the world, were utilised.
