Recently, India has scrapped a deal of spike anti-tank missiles with Israel.

DRDO claimed that it was developing a similar missile at a lower price in partnership with VEM Technologies Ltd.

 

Man-Portable anti-tank guided missile

  • The MPATGM is a third-generation anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), which has been under development by DRDO in partnership with Indian defense contractor VEM Technologies Ltd. since 2015.
  • These are fitted with a high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead.
  • These incorporate many advanced features, including, image infrared radar (IIR) seeker with integrated avionics.
  • MPATGM capable of being fired from the shoulder and can be used during day and night.
  • It has a strike range of 2.5 km.
  • MPATGM works on fire and forget principle and is known for its top attack capabilities.
  • It is effective against both stationary and moving targets.

 

Spike Missile

  • Spike is an anti-tank lightweight, fire-and-forget, man-portable missile manufactured by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
  • It uses electro-optical and fibre-optic technologies.
  • It is available in man-portable, vehicle-launched, and helicopter-launched variants.
  • The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker.
  • The long and extended range versions of the Spike also have the capability of “Fire, Observe and Update” operating mode (also known as Lock-on after launch (LOAL)).
  • The Spike system is made up of the launching tripod with its fire control unit and the missile.
  • The Spike can be operated from the launcher by infantry, or from mounts that can be fitted to vehicles such as fast attack vehicles, armoured personnel carriers or utility vehicles.

  1. Spike-SR with a range of 800m
  2. Spike-MR (Gill) with a range of 2,500m
  3. Spike-LR with 4,000m range
  4. Spike-ER (formerly known as NTD Dandy) with a range of 8,000m
