Mela Kheer Bhawani festival in Jammu and Kashmir

 

The Kheer Bhawani Mela is one of the biggest religious functions of the Kashmiri Pandits.

  • Devotees prayed at the famous Ragnya Devi temple in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Goddess Mata Ragnya Devi is symbolized as a sacred spring at Tula Mula village, near Srinagar.
  • The Mela Kheer Bhawani was celebrated amid chants of religious hymns and ringing of temple bells.
  • The Mela has become a symbol of communal harmony as Muslims in the locality make all the arrangements for the devotees, including setting up of stalls for flowers and other offerings.
  • Mela is one of the biggest religious functions of the displaced community.

 

Temple

  • The Bhawani Mata Temple, dedicated to the Goddess Mata Kheer Bhawani, has been constructed over a Sacred Spring.
  • Within the spring is a marble Temple.
  • The Temple-Spring complex is known as Kheer Bhawani.
  • Devotees offer milk and ‘kheer’ to the Sacred Spring.
  • The devotees of the Goddess Mata Kheer Bhawani fast and gather here on the eighth day of the full moon in the month of May/ June.
  • It is a belief that the Goddess changes the color of the spring’s waters.
  • Turning of the color into shades of black is supposed to signal approaching disaster.
