News Flash

Prime Minister sanctioned an increase in the money awarded under scholarships for the children of the armed forces, paramilitary forces and the railway protection forces killed in the line of duty.

 

Scheme

  • The scholarships are awarded under the National Defence Fund, set up in 1962 to take charge of the voluntary donations in cash and kind received for promotion of the national defence effort.
  • The scheme was also been extended to the wards of state police personnel killed in terrorist and Maoist violence.

 

Major changes

  • The rates of scholarship have been increased from ₹2,000 per month to ₹2,500 per month for boys and from ₹2,250 per month to ₹3,000 per month for girls.
  • The quota of new scholarships for wards of state police officials will be 500 in a year.
  • Under the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme, every year new scholarships are given to 5,500 wards of armed forces, 2,000 wards of paramilitary forces controlled by home ministry and 150 wards of forces controlled by railways ministry.

 

National Defence Fund

  • The National Defence Fund was set up to take charge of voluntary donations in cash and kind received for promotion of the national defence effort, and to decide on their utilisation.
  • The Fund is used for the welfare of the members of the Armed Forces (including Para Military Forces) and their dependents.
  • The Fund is administered by an Executive Committee, with PM as Chairperson, and Defence, Finance and Home Ministers as Members.
  • Accounts of the Fund are kept with the Reserve Bank of India.
  • The fund accepts online contributions.
