The second edition of Singapore India Hackathon 2019 held at IIT-Madras started on 28th September concluded on 30th September.

 

Introduction

Innovation and incubation have become buzzwords for New India. They are the new approach to the task of nation-building and helping to find practical and out-of-the-box solutions to everyday problems in various fields are events that have come to be popular as hackathons. Hackathons are attempts to find home-grown solutions to global problems. The second edition of the Singapore-India Hackathon that started at IIT-Madras came to an end. This first joint international hackathons between India and any other country is an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the event Prime Minister Modi said through events like the hackathons, the aim is to create an ecosystem for innovation in India. Reiterating that India was poised to become a 5 trillion dollar economy, the PM stated that innovation and startups will play a crucial role in achieving the milestone.

 

The second edition of Singapore India Hackathon 2019 held at IIT-Madras started on 28th September concluded on 30th September. While addressing the participants PM Narendra Modi said, Hackathons are great for youngsters to get access to state of the out technology for the solution to global problems.

 

20 teams are taking part in the 36-hour long hackathon. Each team will have three students from both countries for the exchange of culture and ideas.

 

 

Hackathon

  • A Hackathon is an event which is being hosted by a tech company or organization, where programmers, students, and teachers get together to collaborate on software projects.
  • It is usually a day-long competition where software programmers, developers, designers, etc. come together to build and design some new software.
  • Its ultimate purpose is to create usable software or hardware with the goal of creating a functioning product with new concepts and ideas in the event.
  • Hackathons have a specific focus on the programming skills, working environments, operating system, an application used, an API, and to know how to win. One can create any type of software as there is no restriction on this.

 

The focus of Singapore India Hackathon was majorly on:

  • Good health and well-being
  • Quality education
  • Affordable and clean energy

 

Social Hackathons

  • It creates a simple model to predict drought and water scarcity in a locality
  • An automatic instrument to record the call of specific birds and weather parameters in a location
  • Recorder to identify, capture frequency and amplitude range that matches with the target species range
  • The recorder will store data with all relevant weather information for each sequence
  • Building a GPRS guided mobile tablet fitted permanently on SMART wheelchairs and in stretchers
  • Developing sensor-based technology solutions which can detect the nature of waste and enable automated segregation
  • Application to Geo-tag places with a photograph, category, and type of disabled-friendly facility
  • Can also listen and provide navigation to visually-challenged users
  • Analysis of social media posts
  • GPS enabled smartphones

 

Types of Hackathons

Internal Hackathon

  • Also known as a corporate hackathon conducted by an organization for its employees
  • Has an aim of crowdsourcing ideas, promoting entrepreneurship, boosting collaboration, and employee engagement
  • Non-tech backgrounds guys can also participate

External Hackathon

  • The company engages people within and outside the organization
  • Themes and goals are being set
  • Enables companies to harvest ideas from the globe

Online Hackathon

  • Participants are from across different geographic locations and time zones
  • The purpose is to solve the problem, drive innovation

 

Offline Hackathon

  • Lasts for 24 hours
  • Solves problem statements for specific themes

 

Application-based Hackathons

  • Based on specific platforms for development like mobile device operating systems, desktop operating system, etc.

 

Specific programming language based Hackathons

  • Dedicated to creating apps based on a specific programming language like JavaScript, Node.js etc.

 

Cause based Hackathons

  • Known as social hackathons
  • Address prominent issues like healthcare, education, public services
  • Aim to empower people
  • Address social problems specifically

 

Demographic Hackathons

  • Engage demographic groups specifically
  • Often conducts interactive workshops
  • Build and promote awareness

 

Smart India Hackathon

Smart India Hackathon 2020 is a national initiative aimed at providing students with a platform to solve some of the most pressing issues we face in our daily lives. It instills a culture of product innovation and a problem-solving mindset. More than 5 million students from different universities compete for the top prize in over 65 locations. At SIH 2020, students will have the opportunity to work on the challenges facing various ministries, departments, industries, PSUs and NGOs to create world-class solutions for some of the world’s leading organizations, including industries, to help the private sector to hire the best minds in the country.
