The list by TRACE measures business bribery risk in 200 countries, territories, and autonomous and semi-autonomous regions.

Key Findings

  • India has been placed in a better position than neighbouring China in a global list that measures business bribery risks.
  • New Zealand has emerged as the country with the lowest bribery risk.
  • Lowest Bribery Risk: New Zealand, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland
  • Highest Bribery Risk: Somalia, South Sudan, North Korea, Yemen and Venezuela
  • Apart from India, Azerbaijan, Ghana, the Bahamas, Panama, Samoa and Thailand, also have a score of 48 in the matrix.
  • Among the BRICS nations, South Africa is ahead of other countries with a score of 42.
  • The scores of Brazil and the Russian Federation are 53 and 55, respectively.

  • Bangladesh was ranked 178 while India stands on 78th rank.

Trace Bribery Risk Index

Trace provides a score from 1 to 100 to each country for each domain. When a country gets a higher score it means it is in a higher risk of business bribery. India’s score is 48.

The score is based on four factors:

  1. Business Interactions with Government
  2. Anti-Bribery Deterrence and Enforcement
  3. Government and Civil Service Transparency
  4. Capacity for Civil Society Oversight, including the role of the media

TRACE

  • TRACE is a globally recognized anti-bribery business association and leading provider of shared-cost third party risk management solutions. TRACE is headquartered in the United States and registered in Canada, with a presence on five continents.
  • TRACE is comprised of two distinct entities – TRACE International and TRACE Incorporated – that share a common mission to advance commercial transparency worldwide.
  • The TRACE Matrix was originally developed in 2014 in collaboration with RAND Corporation. It is updated annually by TRACE.
